Our Outrigger Canoeing Story
Paddle with purpose. Connect with community.
Based on the beautiful shores of Terrigal Haven, our community club honours the ancient Polynesian heritage of outrigging, a tradition rooted in exploration, navigation, and deep connection to the ocean. For generations, outrigging has brought people together in strength, rhythm and respect for the water.
Our name, Tarragal, meaning “place of wild birds,” reflects both our coastal home, and our spirit. Free, strong and united in movement.
We welcome paddlers of all levels, ages and life stages! Whether you’re stepping into an outrigger for the first time or returning to the water, you’ll find your place in our crew.

Our Winter 2025 Schedule
This is our winter schedule, which includes adjustments to both the children's program and Tuesday afternoons. Our regular schedule will recommence when the weather warms up.
Our classes run according to the arrival times listed below. 'On the water' (OTW) time is 15 minutes after the scheduled arrival time.

For adults, the program is just $300 per person for a full year of paddling.
Our First Nations Program
With Frank Baxter Correctional Centre
Approximately 60–70% of youth in detention are Aboriginal, highlighting the urgent need for culturally grounded, community-based programs. In response, the Tarragal Outrigger Canoe Club formed a partnership with the Frank Baxter Youth Justice Centre at Kariong to deliver a paddling program designed to support these young people. Sessions are held up to four times a month—and at times, three times a week—depending on the boys’ commitments at the Centre. When the program began, many of the boys, along with their Carers, had no ocean skills; some couldn’t swim and most were withdrawn, avoiding eye contact and carrying a deep sense of fear.
Through consistent coaching, connection to culture, and genuine care, these young men have undergone a profound transformation. Today, they greet the Tarragal members with hugs, help prepare the canoes, and take up leadership roles within the team. In March 2024, several of the boys were granted day release by the Department of Justice to compete in the Outrigger State Titles at Shoal Bay in the Novice Men’s division—and they won.
The Frank Baxter Centre has acknowledged the program’s remarkable impact, stating they are “delighted with the growth seen in these boys under the coaching and mentoring of Tarragal Outriggers.” They noted how the boys are “responding to the challenge of the ocean and, importantly, to the members of the Club.” According to the Centre, the program has provided the boys with connection to land and ocean, to the community, and to each other as teammates. It has also fostered personal growth, water safety knowledge, and respect for women, learned through observing how Tarragal’s male members respectfully engage with their female teammates. The Centre described the mentorship by Tarragal men as both “meaningful and impacting”—a testament to what is possible when sport, culture, and community come together to support rehabilitation and reintegration.

Racing with Purpose
At Tarragal Outriggers, we have dedicated competition teams that represent our club at various regattas and races throughout the year. These teams train regularly and compete across local, regional, and state events.
Participation in our competition teams is by invitation only and is based on assessment by one of our head coaches or experienced steerers, ensuring that each paddler is ready for the demands of racing while upholding the values and teamwork that define our club.
Kids’ Outrigging Program – Returning This Summer!
Our fun and affordable children's outrigger program is currently on pause for the winter, but we’ll be back on the water this summer! At just $50 per year per child, it's a great way to introduce kids to paddling in a safe, supportive environment.
Not only do they learn valuable skills on the water, but they also enjoy a fantastic social experience, making new friends, building confidence, and being part of a vibrant paddling community.
